Hello Everyone!!

On June 28, 2007, several members of the Section attended the banquet and participated in the presentation of the Huntsville Association of Technical Societies 2007 Professional of the Year (POY) award to the IEEE Huntsville Section recipient. I was personally delighted to participate in the recognition of Mr. Keith Jadus, 2005-2006 Past Section Chair, as our recipient of the HATS award and also presented Keith with the Section’s award for the 2007 POY. Keith has been highly active in the Section for several years and very deserving of this recognition. Please pass along your congratulatory remarks to Keith, if you haven’t had an opportunity to do so. Pictures from the HATS POY banquet are included in this edition of the LiveWire.

Mr. George McClure, our Region 3 Director recently sent me an e-mail regarding Volunteering in America – IEEE impact. He references several reports, prepared by the Corporation for National and Community Service, which are available at http://www.nationalservice.gov/about/role_impact/performance_research.asp.  The reports address the volunteerism rates for the top 50 metropolitan cities in the United States and notes that the rates vary from about 14.4%  (Las Vegas, NV) to 40.5% (Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN), Interestingly the Only IEEE Region 3 city to make the top ten was Charlotte, NC, coming in at number nine with a volunteerism rate of 34.3%. I also noticed that Atlanta came in at 26.1%.  Thanks to all of you for your support in volunteerism and taking an active role in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

An update on the Tennessee Valley BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) preparations is provided in a separate article. We are still looking for a couple volunteers to serve as members of the “A-Team” technical crew during the local hub Competition to be held at Calhoun Community College, and of the Steering Committee.  If you interested in serving as a volunteer for this year’s event, please contact me at willie.fitzpatrick@ieee.org.  Pictures from the Tennessee Valley BEST Kick Off are available in this edition of the Live Wire.

We are also looking for volunteers to serve as Engineering mentors, judges, etc. for the Alabama Regional Future City Competition 2008. Please contact Sonya Hutchinson for more information on the Future City competition or you may access the information provided on the Future City link provided.  We appreciate all help that you can give Sonya in recruiting candidate 7th and 8th grade student teams across Alabama, along with teachers and engineers to mentor and nurture those teams. You may also contact me if you are interested in serving as a mentor for the 2008 competition.

Please see the links for important meeting dates for the Huntsville Section Executive Committee, our Technical Society Chapters and the Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) affinity group.  All graduating students please remember to continue your IEEE membership benefits as you begin your careers. You are automatically a member of GOLD. Feel free to come by any of our meetings to find out more.  The SoutheastCon 2008 Committee meets the second Tuesday of each month. Please contact Eric Grigorian if you are interested in getting involved. We need lots of volunteers from members in the professional and student chapters.

I also encourage everyone to participate in the IEEE Elections this year. See information on the IEEE-USA President-Elect candidates at http://www.ieee.org/web/aboutus/corporate/election/usavp.html and the IEEE-USA Member-At-Large biographies at http://www.ieee.org/web/aboutus/corporate/election/usamal.html. Access to the candidates’ biographies are available via links on either of these two sites. You may cast your vote electronically at https://www.directvote.net/ieee/ or return the paper ballot mailed to your home.

Many of you are eligible for elevation to Senior Member. Contact anyone on our Membership Committee or Woody Williams to get the process started today.
