Workforce Coalition: Education Task Force

I am leading an Education Task Force to develop education-industry partnerships and build student interest and skills for the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce. The charts linked here from the last Workforce Coalition: Education Task Force meeting summarize proposed plans for non-profit and business/industry partnerships with schools.

Huntsville engineers have been collaborating with local teachers this summer to integrate STEM subject-matter expertise and workforce connections into hands-on, problem solving activities. Educator and Engineer feedback has been very positive thus far and most of the engineers plan to continue to act as consultants to teachers and possibly mentors to students.

Participants at the July 12th Education Task Force Meeting decided that we should address strategies to gain scientist and engineer participation in professional development, as well as facilitate partnership activities in local schools to improve STEM skills. The strategy sub-group meeting will be held on Monday, August 20, 2007 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the NASA Educator Resource Center next to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. The meeting is scheduled at this time so that educators can attend after students leave for the day and hopefully others can attend near the end of a work day.

I hope you can join us for the meeting. Please let me know if you have questions and/or suggestions, and invite your colleagues who may also be interested.

Thanks,

Cheryl
