Chair's Corner
Willie Fitzpatrick, Section Chair

Hello Everyone!!

The Educational Activities Committee was been very busy during the latter part of March and the first of April 2007.  Section representatives participated in judging the Alabama Council for Technology in Education (ACTE) programming category on March 27th and other ACTE events at the VBC on March 28th. Please see this month’s article for additional information on our participation in ACTE.  Volunteers from the Section judged special awards categories for the Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF), which was held at UAH during April 5-7 2007. Science fair awards included a certificate and $100 Savings Bond for 4 Junior and 4 Senior projects. The Section was the Computer Science Category Sponsor for the ASEF.  Please see Frank Parris’ article on the Section’s Science Fair Awardees at the ASEF.

Members of the Section’s ExCom (including representatives from SoutheastCon 2008 committee), the Radisson, and the Von Braun Center attended the IEEE SoutheastCon 2007 Conference, held in Richmond, VA during March 23-26, 2007. The Conference Committee returned with several valuable lessons learned from the Richmond Conference, which will be beneficial in the planning for our hosting the Conference in Huntsville during April 4-6, 2008. This committee meets the second Tuesday of each month. Please contact Eric Grigorian if you are interested in getting involved. We need lots of volunteers from members in the professional and student chapters.

Our April ExCom was held at Alabama A&M University (AAMU) on April 4, 2007 in the Engineering and Technology building. We held an abbreviated business meeting and were given an outstanding tour by Dr. Trent Montgomery of some of the AAMU Engineering Labs. We plan on the ExCom going back for a meeting this fall; however, Dr. Montgomery has graciously invited any of the Chapters to take advantage of their conference facilities for future meetings. You can contact me for any additional information.

Please see our Society meeting announcements. Many of you are eligible for elevation to Senior Member. Please contact our Membership Committee or Woody Williams to get the process started today.

Please visit the UAH Professional Development link in our announcement section.  Also make a special note that our May ExCom will be held at UAH on May 3, 2007 instead of May 2nd since we will be participating in the NASA Expo that will be held on May 2, 2007 at the Marshall Space Flight Center. Please plan on attending both events.

Sincerely,

Willie J. Fitzpatrick, PhD
