2007 Alabama Council on Technical Education (ACTE)
Willie Fitzpatrick, ACTE Judge
March 27-28, 2007

The IEEE Huntsville Section Educational Activities Committee helped judge the 2007 Alabama Council for Technology in Education (ACTE) Northwest Regional Technology Fair held on March 27-28, 2007. The ACTE Technology Fair includes the following project categories: General Applications, Hardware/Robotics, Webpage Design, Multimedia Applications, Video Production, and Programming, the Team Programming Challenge, and the Information Technology Test.

ACTE held the Team Programming Challenge on Tuesday, March 27th at Randolph High School. Jim Covington, Willie Fitzpatrick, and Bob Robinson judged student teams after they finished four problems of varied mathematical complexity. The students interpreted the problem statements and solved them within a two hour timed competition, selecting their programming language, operating system, and hardware. They programmed in Visual Basic, Java, and C++ on Windows platforms (no Macintoshes and no Linux this year). All the teams did well at the competition, with the students from Bob Jones taking top honors in the senior category for the second year running.

For the ACTE Technology Fair held at the Von Braun Center in downtown Huntsville, Rob Smith, Jim Covington, and Bob Robinson judged Robotics, Webpage Design, and Multimedia Applications, age groups of the contestants ranging from grades 3-12. As always the case, we saw excellent examples of the contestants from schools across the region displaying their technical skills, showing evidence of great instruction and mentoring by their teachers.
