Alabama Students Demonstrate Their Potential as Future City Planners and Tomorrow's Engineers

Alabama Regional Future City Competition:

We had a great ARFCC is this year on Saturday, January 20th, 2007 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.  This was a VERY special year for Future City Competition, as the 15th year anniversary of this event hosted by National Engineers Week, but is only the third time the event we have hosted it in Alabama.  The IEEE Huntsville Section sponsored the 2007 event and we plan to make it an annual program for Alabama students.

Our teams from all over the state worked hard to design and build their futuristic cities.  We judged their abstract and essay before competition day, and on that day, the judges evaluated their city models and the presentation skills. The teams (consisting of 1 teacher, 1 engineer mentor, and 3 seventh or eighth students) all did terrific, so the judges had a difficult job.   Please check out our regional website to see the schools that participated this year, and scroll through the competition photos at http://www.ieee-huntsville.org/ARFCC/photos.html.

The winners of the Alabama Regional Competition, First Christian Academy, won an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete nationally in February during National Engineer's Week, along with $250 to the school. The winners of the National Future City Competition will win a trip to space camp in our own backyard here in Huntsville, Alabama!

Discovery Middle School won the second place trophy and $200 for their school, and Chambers Academy from Lafayette, Alabama won third place and $150. Special award winners follow:
