Joint Chapter of the Communications, APS, and MTT Societies (JCAM)
Dr. Hans Schantz, JCAM Chair

Dr. Hans Schantz, Chief Scientist of The Q-Track Corporation, is presenting a noon lecture on “Near-Field Technology: An Emerging RF Discipline”. Cosponsored by the Huntsville GOLD chapter and the Joint Chapter of the Communications, APS, and MTT Societies (JCAM), this event will take place:

Date:        Friday, October 6th, 2006
Time:        Noon until 1:15 p.m.
Location:  BizTech Conference room, 515 Sparkman Drive (map

In this presentation, Hans explains and surveys the emerging RF discipline of near-field technology. He defines the meaning of the “near field” concept, and then presents a brief history of near-field technology from Faraday until the present day. He focuses on recent near-field technology advances for applications like Near Field Communications (NFC), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and Real Time Location Systems (RTLS). He discusses extending propagation laws and antenna gains to the near-field regime. JCAM and Huntsville GOLD are cosponsoring this event.

Dr. Hans Schantz is Founder, Chairman, and CTO of the Q-Track Corporation (www.q-track.com), a start-up company pioneering a narrowband, low-frequency, low-cost, high-accuracy positioning technology called "Near-Field Electromagnetic Ranging." Dr Schantz earned his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from University of Texas at Austin.

His work experience includes IBM, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the Ohio State University ElectroScience Lab. In 1999, he joined Time Domain Corporation in Huntsville as an Antenna Engineer. His pioneering work in ultrawideband (UWB) antennas led to over a dozen patents. He authored The Art and Science of UWB Antennas (Norwood, MA: Artech House, 2005). Dr Schantz is an IEEE Senior Member, and chairs the Huntsville JCAM Chapter.

You do not have to be an IEEE member to attend, we welcome all guests.  Please post the attached flyer in your workplace, encourage your coworkers to attend, and feel free to bring your lunch. Dr. Schantz will present for 45 minutes, and answer attendee questions for 15-30 minutes afterward. Please email or phone him if you plan to attend so that we can get an approximate headcount for planning, but come even if you forget to RSVP.

See you there!!
