Contemporary business organizations are increasingly structuring work around teams because teams can lead to substantial improvement in both the quality and quantity of a firm’s services and products. A majority of employees also report that they prefer working in team environments, suggesting that teams can indeed provide organizations with a method of simultaneously increasing employee productivity and worklife quality. Teams hold a great deal of promise for changing the way business is conducted, but not all teams are successful.

Dr. Daniel Chang earned his Doctorate of Business Administration degree in information technology management from Nova Southeastern University and an MBA from Florida Institute of Technology. He was managing director of CBI Microsystems (Pty) Ltd., South Africa for 12 years before he and his family immigrated to the U.S. seven years ago. He currently works as an Adtran design engineer in Huntsville. Dr. Chang is a native of Taiwan and chairs the IEEE computer society for the Huntsville Section. His research interests in knowledge management include the three aspects of people, process, and technology in work teams, as well as applying modeling and simulation techniques to group behavior.

Organizations adopting knowledge work teams face complex problems that arise from the specific application of knowledge work teams in business contexts. Combining the real world experiences of these teams with team learning and knowledge creation theory and research brings life to team mental model issues and paints a holistic picture of knowledge work teams operating in the workplace.
