Huntsville EMC 2006 Event
July 11, 2006: The Huntsville EMC Chapter had a very successful mini-seminar on "The Fundamentals of EMC", a one-day seminar and exhibition with speaker Clayton Paul of Mercer Univ.

The Huntsville chapter of the IEEE EMC Society has recently added several folks to the email list that I would like to welcome to our chapter. If you are not an EMC Society member yet, we encourage you to join.
So far we have held four chapter meetings this year with technical presentations, including the recent one day EMC tutorial and EMC exhibitors on July 11. Monitor the chapter website (http://ewh.ieee.org/r3/huntsville/emc/) to keep up with future plans. To close out technical presentations for the year, we plan to invite one of the IEEE EMC Society Distinguished Lecturers (DLs) to our September 14 chapter technical meeting.
There are a total of five DLs available and each has multiple presentation topics.
Since this will be the first time for us to coordinate a DL lecturer, I propose that we limit ourselves to a US-based speaker to avoid the hassles of international travel. Hopefully this is acceptable to everyone.
Since each speaker has multiple topics, I propose that we:
1. Vote on the choice of speaker
2. Confirm availability with the selected speaker 3. Vote on the speaker's topic
I am setting a deadline of 21 May 2006 for you to respond to me with your vote for speaker. If you are getting this email and would be interested in attending the September meeting, you are eligible to vote for your speaker or choice.

Here is a brief synopsis of future speakers and potential topics.
1. David Hockanson, Ph.D., NCE
Topics:
1. High-Speed Power Integrity Design: A presentation focused on the various components and requirements of Power Integrity from Silicon to VRM.
2. System Troubleshooting: A presentation intended to walk through the analysis of pre-scans and subsequent debugging approaches.
3. Inductance in EMC: A discussion on magnetic-flux, and how it can be decomposed for use in EMC.

1. Radio-wave propagation modeling for broadband wireless communications
2. Propagation and Detection of Signals Before, During, and After Building Implosions (From Apartment Buildings to Sport Stadiums)
3. Measurements and Analysis of Shielding of RF Signal into Large Structures (From Apartment Buildings to Sport Stadiums)
4. New Class of Materials: A Discussion on Double Negative Materials, Transition Boundary Conditions, Controllable Surfaces, and Design of Metamaterials)
5. An Overview of EMC test Facilities: What is needed for the Future?
6. Electromagnetic Absorbing Materials for EMC Chamber Applications

1. Electrostatic Discharge - From physics to testing
2. Electrostatic Discharge - It Failed! How to find the root cause!
3. Obtaining trustworthy results in numerical calculations
4. EMI Analysis of complex systems
5. Recent and coming developments in the standardization of ESD testing
6. How simulation can help EMC without solving for the complete system
One or portions of two of the following topics will be included in a single lecture:
1. The use of slow traces as signal return, e.g. in flex cables or two-layer boards
2. The use of an active differential probe to identify the source of an emission
3. How can a Synchronous Switching Noise current be measured and will it provide sufficient excitation to cause a failing signal level?
4. Using power traces instead of power planes: What is the trade-off?
