Huntsville Section Honors Six for 2004
Will Preussel - Awards Chair

With our focus this year on the Section's 50th anniversary and all the special awards and activities associated with it, we should not overlook the Section's three annual awards and three special awards, which were presented at the Engineers Week Banquet on February 26. This year, as always, we honored three outstanding individuals for accomplishments respectively in Engineering, Education, and Service to the IEEE.

Our Outstanding Engineer award went to Dennis Miller, a senior software engineer with General Dynamics Tactical Command & Control Systems here in Huntsville. He has a BS from Georgia State University in Computer Science and Software Engineering, and is working on a Master's in Computer Systems Management and Software Development Management with the University of Maryland. He was honored for his innovative applications, outstanding work ethic, and engineering expertise that have earned him the highest respect of his employer and its military customer. Particularly noteworthy has been his willingness to travel to the field of military operations to provide field support for the Tactical Airspace Integrated System during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Our Outstanding Educator award was presented to Dr. Bob Berinato, a senior principal engineer with Dynetics, Inc. in Huntsville. Bob holds a BS in applied physics and a Bachelors of ME from Georgia Institute of Technology, and MS and PhDs in electrical engineering from UAH. He was honored primarily for his contributions while teaching in the UAH ECE Graduate and Continuing Education Programs. He was nominated by one of his students who reports that "Bob's instruction is very informative and he has a dedicated attitude towards his students." Dr. Berinato also serves as "Dean" of "Dynetics University", and in this position is responsible for the organization and continuing operations of that company's highly successful professional in-house training. Bob also served as Publicity Chair for the IEEE Radar Conference 2003.

Our Outstanding Service award went to Keith Jadus, an employee of the US Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center in the Tactical Missiles Functional Area of the System Simulation Directorate, specializing in the development of millimeter-wave missile system simulations. He has a Bachelor's and a Master's in Electrical Engineering from UAH. Keith served two years in the difficult job of Section Treasurer and then he moved on to the position of Vice Chairman. Everyone on the Executive Committee agrees that he has served with great distinction in both positions. In addition, Keith served as treasurer for the IEEE Radar Conference 2003.

At the banquet we also recognized Dr. Robert McMillan for his outstanding job as General Chair of RadarCon 2003 and to Dynetics, Inc. for all the support that they provided to RadarCon 2003. Dr. Bob Berinato accepted the award for Dynetics. Ms. Patricia Griffin was recognized as General Chair of AUTOTESTCON 2002.
