Saturn V - National Historic Landmark

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) is home to the Saturn V that has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The Saturn V Executive Committee is currently raising funds in a $5 million campaign to restore the rocket, which is rusting after 30 years of exposure to the Alabama weather.

The money will be used to prepare a site for the Saturn V on the Rocket Center grounds where a permanent structure could eventually be built, move the Saturn V from the back of Rocket Park to that location (in front of the Marriott), and restore the rocket. The funds will also pay for a temporary structure in which the rocket will be housed until a permanent structure can be built.

As part of this project, interest has been expressed in a Saturn V specialty automobile tag, and we have filed an application with the Alabama Department of Revenue. A PDF file of the tag design is attached. As part of the approval process, we will be asked to appear before a special Legislative Oversight Committee sometime in November. At that time, we would like to indicate to the committee the level of interest for such a tag.

If you would be interested in purchasing a Saturn V tag when you renew your tag registration, please indicate by return e-mail to mailto:saturnv@spacecamp.com (The Saturn V tag will not be put into production unless 1,000 pay $50 and sign a "Commitment to Purchase" Form. At this point, we're trying to determine whether 1,000 people would be willing to do this. ) We will print the responses and use the stack of replies as a visual aid at the committee hearing.

The tag, which can be personalized, costs $50 annually and is paid to the county licensing plate official. Of that amount, the state will return $41.25 to the Saturn V Restoration Fund. If you have friends and family who would be interested in purchasing this tag, please forward this e-mail.
