It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Lloyd W. Root Jr. on Saturday, May 25, at the age of 68. Lloyd was a long time member of the IEEE and the Computer Society. He was the newsletter editor for the IRE before it joined with the AIEE to form the IEEE.
Lloyd was a retired reserve Colonel and worked in the fields of electrical engineering, physics, education and management, primarily at Redstone Arsenal. He was working on Polarimetric radar at the time of his retirement from Redstone. I believe that he received a Presidential citation for his many accomplishments at the time of his retirement. Lloyd built Huntsville's first commercial TV station and got it on the air in August of 1959.
Lloyd was very active in his church, St. Joseph's Catholic Community, and in Cursillo, Kairos, Lay Salvatorians, and the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by one son and was survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, two brothers and five grandchildren.
