Chairman’s Corner

Alabama State Science and Engineering Fairs

Once again, Jim Kennedy provided an outstanding effort in orchestrating the State Science and Engineering Fair held on April 5th at UAH's Spragins Hall. I would like to sincerely thank Jim Kennedy, Wayne Wolf, Susan Bonne, and Willie Fitzpatrick for their help in judging this year's event. (See separate article.) Thanks to the efforts of Jim Kennedy, the Huntsville Section also participated in the North Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

UAH Student Branch and IEEE SOUTHEASTCON

The competition for the selection of the best pong-playing robot was held at UAH's Engineering Building on April 2nd. This year we were faced with selecting the best one of the three robots designed. Two of the designs were part of the Engineering Design class and the third entry was from Student Chapter volunteers. (See separate article.) The team members were:

Silver Streak (Class project) - James Stafford - team captain, Scott South, Miranda Parton, Daniel Miller, Derrick Cameron, Robert Sawyer, Julie Troup, Preston Chidebelu, and Wykeisa Jackson.

Volunteer Team - Jeremy Nuckols - team captain, Jana Woodham, Ande Boyer, Marsha Robinson, Bridgett Johnston, Shirley Goosby, and Nathan Wincey.

Head Banger (Class project) - Patrick Johnson - team captain, Marty LeBlanc, Ellen LaFiore, Kyle Holdmeyer, Jana Bladow, Josh Hester, Willie Harper, Virginia Kibler, and Elizabeth Lampkin.

The students had very intuitive designs but unfortunately only one design could compete in the SouthEastCon. As a result of the local competition, Silver Streak turned out to be the clear winner; however, it was not able to be the clear winner in the SouthEastCon contest.

I would like to thank all the participating students for the enormous efforts that they spent in the design of the robots and wish them success in their future endeavor. I would also like to thank Dr. Adhami, Dr. Piccirillo, Dr. Corsetti, and Dr. Joiner of UAH's ECE Department for their continuous support of the SouthEastCon hardware design projects.
