Huntsville IEEE Computer Society

The Huntsville IEEE Computer Society is getting ready for a banner year. The new website at http://ewh.ieee.org/r3/huntsville/cs/ (thanks to Dennis Weldy) is under construction, and will list our programs and meeting schedule once we get it ready.

We've had elections, and here are the officers for 2002:
Chair: Wiley, John T
Vice Chair: Anderson, James W
Membership Chair: Cox, Glenn W
Treasurer: Grierson, Skip
Secretary: Kim, Jonathan
Programs Chair: Morantz, Bradley
Member At Large: Newman, Tim
Webmaster: Weldy, Dennis M

You can email the officers at r3-huntsville-cs@ieee.org (thanks to Willy Albanes). Here's a brief bio for each new officer:

Jim Anderson is married with four grown children, five grandchildren and three more grandchildren on the way. He has been active in his church and the technical community for many years. Jim has worked for Wyle Laboratories for 20 years supporting the nuclear power industry. He has been a member of IEEE for 30 years and has served the Huntsville Section first as Treasurer for nine years, Chairman for two years, Past-Chairman for a year. Jim is the current Section Secretary, Communications Committee (not Society) Chairman and Finance Director for AUTOTESTCON2002. He has been a member of IEEE Standards Coordinating Committee 29, on battery standards, for many years. Jim also served on the HATS Board as Finance Director for one year and Treasurer for two years.

Glenn Cox recently became a member of the UAH CS faculty where he teaches Computer Networking, Computer Architecture, and Digital Logic Design. Before joining UAH, Dr. Cox spent 20+ years as an Engineer and Project Manager in Huntsville, Washington D.C, and Albuquerque for defense businesses including LCDC, General Research Corporation, and Scientific Research Corporation. In addition to the areas listed above, his technical specialties include real-time distributed simulation and fault-tolerant systems. He and his wife and dogs farm in Missouri.

Malcolm (Skip) Grierson joined Adtran, Inc. and moved to Huntsville just over a year ago. He is a senior design engineer developing both hardware and software for the Multiplexer product line. He has worked in the telecom industry for the past twenty years and has designed and developed a variety of telecom products. Mr. Grierson received the MS and BSEE degrees from the University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida in 1980.

Dr. Jonnathan Kim currently holds a position as senior engineering manager for CACI Inc. Since 1983, he has been working in the broad spectrum of engineering, including project management, R&D, system engineering, software and hardware design. His areas of expertise are in signal/image processing, ultra-wide band (UWB) communications, human computer interface, and sensors.

Brad Morantz has been at Raytheon since fall 2001. Previously he has taught at Georgia State University, has worked (contract) at Matsushita in development of intelligent driver information systems, been self employed in developing and manufacturing automotive electronics, worked in government defense, etc, etc. His Ph.D. is in Decision Science with a minor in Computer Science, MS in Decision Science, and BS in CIS/EE. His area of research is machine cognition, with associated work in hybrid systems and their applications.

Tim Newman is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) and the author of over 40 publications. Dr. Newman completed his Ph.D. at Michigan State University. Prior to joining the faculty at UAH, Dr. Newman was selected for a National Research Council postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Newman's work has been supported by AMD, Sun, the Air Force, NASA, the National Science Foundation, and other agencies and organizations. He was also selected for an Early Faculty (CAREER) Award by the NSF. Dr. Newman's research interests include scientific visualization, computer graphics, computer vision, biomedical imaging, and applications of high-performance processing to problems in these areas. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, member of the IEEE Computer Society, and the ACM.

Dennis Weldy is a software engineer with EDS PLM Solutions where he works on Solid Edge. He's also a Ph.D. candidate at UAH in computer science. He's been a member of ACM and IEEE since 1988, and an avid scuba diver.

John Wiley has been at Intergraph for more than a decade (was previously with BDM, and before that most everywhere), where he administers the Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001) and contributes to Software Process Improvement (S/W-CMM and CMMI) efforts. His colorful background includes lots of work and education in Software Engineering, Music, and the Culinary Arts. In addition to his Computer Society activity, he's a participating member of ACM, ACDM, ASQ, HAVBUG, HUNTUG, IEEE, IIA, NDIA, and has been active with IABC, Old Crows, SOLE, SSP, and STC.
