UAH IEEE Student - Chapter News

The IEEE Student Branch wishes to congratulate two UAH - IEEE members, Dr. Reza Adhami and Mr. Peter Meenen, on the recognition of their Biometrics research on Fingerprint Security, the front page feature of the Huntsville Times on October 2, 2001. The technical version of this research has also been published in the student quarterly magazine of, IEEE "Potentials," August/September 2001. The IEEE Student Branch plans to make the electronic versions available for viewing on-line via their new website, (http://ieee.uah.edu/). Dr. Adhami is the Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Mr. Peter Meenen is a graduate student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Other interesting news from UAH - IEEE is that the student branch has been rated as "very active" by Student Services at the National Headquarters since the fall of 2000 with their many technical activities, social activities, and participation at student conferences, including participation in technical and social functions with the Huntsville professional section. According to Director of Student Services, Laura Durrett, the UAH - IEEE student branch is more active with fewer members than the MIT - IEEE student branch which has 200 members. The Annual Report of Activities for the 2000-01 academic year listed nineteen activities for the period of six months (two semesters.) The new academic year is headed in the same direction with more innovation to come.

More exciting news is the anticipation of the very first IEEE Student Professional Awareness Conference (S-PAC) in the spring, which will host a number of speakers on topics preselected by survey from students. Furthermore, innovative ideas will soon be reality with other student branches( ie, University of Alabama at Birmingham) attending UAH Student Branch General Body meetings and presentations via tele-conference.

Students and faculty from any university, and all professionals are cordially invited to all of the UAH Student Branch's events that are advertised in the IEEE LiveWire and other medium.
