Meet the Control Systems Society's New Chair

Christian H. Tournes

Received Engineer degrees from French Air Force Academy and from L'Ecole Nationale de L'Aéronautique et de L'Espace, both in Aerospace and a M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His research interest is in Adaptive Control and Subspace Stabilization, and their applications to aerospace systems, i.e. missile and aircraft and Reusable Launch Vehicle guidance and control, and propulsion systems.

Works currently for Davidson Technologies as Chief Scientist. His area of expertise is the development of algorithms and control systems and the development of simulation models. He also teaches at UAH as part time professor.

Prior to becoming U.S. citizen, worked for Thales, previously known as Thomson-CSF, a French systems and electronics company. His major technical involvement was in Command and Control Systems. He led major architectural studies of the NATO Allied Command Europe Air Command and Control System, embracing all air operations from Norway to Turkey. He also pioneered the company's initial research in JTIDS-like multifunction digital communication and positioning systems and worked on multiple missile system projects. His last position was Corporate Vice President.

Worked for Dassault Aviation, to design the Navigation and Fire Control System of a Mirage 2000 strike version.

Lectured for three years as a full time professor at French Air Force Academy, flight mechanics and aircraft design and directed academic projects. During this time, he was involved as a part time researcher of Plasma Physics Laboratory of Ecole Polytechnique France, with a research interest in Free Electron Lasers.

Served in French Air Force, flying Mirage IV aircraft.

He is an IEEE and AIAA senior member.

He is passionate of art, in particular Dutch painting and French Empire furniture and artifacts.
