Abstract: The presentation starts with an introduction to the different facets of the information fusion process in the context of autonomous or machine aided intelligent decision system. A global architecture, that has the flexibility to adapt the information fusion system design to specific application environments, is employed to illustrate these different facets. The role played by the different tools in the fields of pattern recognition and image analysis in the information fusion process is then discussed to bring out the critical contributions made by these fields to the information fusion process.

Biographical Sketch: Dr. Belur V. Dasarathy, an IEEE fellow, is a Senior Principal Engineer at Dynetics, Inc., Huntsville, Alabama. He is engaged in research and development in the areas of discrimination, target recognition, multi-sensor multi-source data fusion, pattern recognition, image analysis and other related topics, for the design and development of automated intelligent decision systems arising in a variety of strategic and tactical defense-related problems as well as other civilian applications. He has been an invited speaker at many conferences including IEEE International conference on Industrial Technology, ICIT 2000, International Conference on Applications of Pattern recognition 1998, IX Spanish Symposium on Pattern Recognition and Image Processing 2001. He is founding Editor-in-Chief of the international Journal on Information Fusion, published by Elsevier Science, the very first journal dedicated to this evolving field.

Dr. Dasarathy has over 180 open literature publications and is the author of three IEEE Computer Society Press books: Decision Fusion, Nearest Neighbor (NN) Norms: NN Pattern classification Techniques, and Image Data Compression: Block Truncation Coding.
