June 2005 Computer Society Chapter Meeting
Topic: Multi-Spectral Stimulator Injection Test Method
Speaker: Dr. Stephen Jones, Scientific Research Corporation
Abstract: The Multi-Spectral Stimulator (MSS) is portable, low cost, scalable, and can produce synchronous
IR and RF outputs for either injection or projection stimulation of a multi-mode sensor system. This briefing
will detail the system components and the move towards real-time closed-loop integration of a prototype MSS to hardware
and a digital model simulation.
The Multi-Spectral Stimulator is designed to answer the future
testing and evaluation needs for emerging multi-spectral technology. The IR and RF scenes are temporally
and spatially registered and generated from three-dimensional databases. A common Scenario Controller coordinates
terrain, target and sensor data to a Radar Environment Simulator and an IR Scene Generation system. The Scenario
Controller also acts as the conduit to a Test and Training ENabling Architecture (TENA) Interface thus allowing the
stimulator to interact with outside systems (i.e. battlefield scenarios, live targets / threats, and simulations).

Joint Huntsville Section & JCAM Meeting
Topic: Easing DSP Algorithm Development for Communications
Speaker: Dr. Gerry Cain, DSP Creations, Ltd
Abstract:Modern communication systems are growing in complexity, with ever-tighter
interdependence of modulation, coding, detection and signal enhancement schemes. Multi-Carrier Modulation, spread-spectrum
CDMA, and now Ultra-Wideband scenarios are competing, clashing and cross-fertilizing at an alarming tempo. DSP algorithms
fuel this diversity of burgeoning approaches, but the sophisticated frameworks laid down in advance for overall systems
makes innovation in algorithms cumbersome.
It is far too late - once an entire system is shaping up - to commence major revision of the underlying algorithms being
employed for such tasks as frequency estimation, channel estimation, synchronization or equalization. Proof-of-Concept
experimentation needs to be done early; while re-thinking is cheap and detailed processing techniques are not yet entrenched.
The tools described in this talk make it easy to quickly assemble the key elements of new DSP algorithms and rapidly gain
insight into their feasibility and effectiveness. This is done at graphical block diagram level, without the necessity
of any code-writing burden, by use of a special Simulink-based LabKit. Within a few short minutes the essence of a processing
subsystem can be wired-up (virtually), flexibly exercised and visually monitored on powerful Signal Analyzers.
